Category Carminative; pharmaceutic aid (flavouring agent).
Cardamom Oil is the volatile oil obtained by distillation from the crushed fruits of Elettaria cardamomum (L.) Maton (Family Zingiberaceae).
Origin of plant Cardamom Oil-yielding plant is native to India.
Constituents Cardamom Oil contains mainly -terpinyl acetate, 1,8-cineole, -terpineol, and linalool.
Description Colourless or pale yellow liquid; odour, pungent and aromatic.
Solubility Miscible with ethanol.
Packaging and storage Cardamom Oil shall be kept in well-filled, tightly closed containers, protected from light, and stored at a temperature not exceeding 25°.
Solubility test Soluble, at 25º, in 5 volumes of ethanol (70 per cent).
Specific gravity 0.917 to 0.947 (Appendix 4.9).
Refractive index 1.461 to 1.467, at 20° (Appendix 4.7).
Optical rotation +22° to +44° (Appendix 4.8).
Ester value 90 to 156 (Appendix 5.5).
